Surreal, mesmerizing shocker by Italian terror genius Argento doesn't make much sense, but it has a lot of style. Cast includes Leigh McCloskey, Irene Marvel, Sacha Pitoeff, Daria Nicolodi, Eleonora Giorgi, Veronica Lazar, and Alida Valli. (107 minutes, 1984)
Cuba Crossing - Our lead man Stuart Whitman becomes embroiled in a plot to take out Fidel Castro. Filmed in Key West, Florida, and at minimum the landscape is pretty. Cast includes Stuart Whitman, Robert Vaughn, Caren Kaye, Raymond St. Jacques, Woody Strode, Sybil Danning, Albert Salmi, and Michael Gazzo. (90 minutes, 1980)
Believe in Me - Donovan moves to a tiny Oklahoma town in 1964 to take a teaching job, although when he arrives he discovers he's been assigned to coach the girls basketball team. What is more, the girls have no self respect and little help from the school. Genuine heartland tale transcends above its familiar underdog formula. Donovan and Mathis as his loyal spouse are first rate. Cast includes Jeffrey Donovan, Samantha Mathis, Bruce Dem, Bob Gunton, Heather Matarazzo, Alicia Lagano, and Chris Ellis. (108 minutes, 2007)
The Prince and the Showgirl - Relatively good but slow moving comedy of saucy American show gal Monroe being courted by Prince Regent of Carpathia (Olivier) throughout the 1911 coronation of George V. Filmed in England, with admirable performances by Monroe and Olivier. Cast includes Marilyn Monroe, Laurence Olivier, Sybil Thorndike, Jeremy Spencer, and Richard Wattis. (117 minutes, 1957)
Like Water for Chocolate - Striking and sensuous film from a novel by Laura Esquivel set in the early part of the 20th century - a young girl's life is conditioned by her somber and steadfast mother, who treats her terribly. Spectacular story, not without humor, with an outstanding cast and a top of the line performance from lead actress Cavazos. Cast includes Lumi Cavazos, Marco Leonardi, Regina Tome, Mario Ivan Martinez, and Ada Carrasco. (113 minutes, 1992)
The Indian in the Cupboard - A young man (Scardino) acquires an old chest as a birthday present, and discovers that when he sets a toy Indian inside and turns the key, the Indian comes to life. Then he sees that the Indian is not a toy, however a genuine human being. Troubles follow, particularly while his best buddy summons to life a toy cowboy. Cast includes Hal Scardino, Lindsay Crouse, Richard Jenkins, Rishi Bhat, and Nestor Serrano. (96 minutes, 1995)
