03 Oct 09 Polynesian Tattoo Designs – The Perfect Tattoo For You

by Scott Hastings

Thousands of tattoo designs are available on websites and in catalogues waiting to be selected. Tattoos in general are becoming more popular these days and it is tribal Polynesian designs that are becoming increasingly more common.

You need to understand that there are two distinct styles when it comes to Polynesian tattoo designs. The first of these is called Etua. Etua have a strong spiritual and religious meaning to them. Some symbols are said to be magic and will keep one safe from the wrath of the gods.

While the style Enata can be described as the natural designs which describe the person their identity and status. This includes their social level, island of origin, occupation and history.

Symbols within Polynesian tattoo designs and their meaning are as follows -

Shark teeth: This tattoo means to protect. Firstly, shark teeth are symbolic of protection.

Turtles - A turtle symbol represents long life and fertility.

Shells - Polynesians equate shells with prosperity; this could be because they were once a form of money.

Shark Designs - Shark imagery is considered as an object of worship. In Polynesia shark tattoos are considered to offer safety in the face of threats.

Gecko - It is believed that the gecko has powers of a supernatural nature and are feared but also held in awe by the Polynesians. It is also believed that if a green gecko laughs then it is an awful omen of bad fortune and illness.

Tiki - The god Tiki is often shown with eyes closed. Tiki smells trouble prior to its arrival, and that is the main reason.

The population which composes the Polynesian islands is scattered over a great distance. Their cultures include popular places are Samoa, Cook Islands, Easter Island, Tahiti, French Polynesia, Tonga, as well as Hawaii. Over thousands of years, the people across these islands developed their own distinct cultures.

The shared traits among tattoo designs is truly incredible and also extend to tattoo heritage. In this day and age, Polynesian tattoo designs do not have the same significance because people love them for the design rather than magical protection or a statement of status.
