He helped invent cubism, was one of the primary artists to help define modernism, and changed both the worlds of painting and sculpture forever.
In his personal life he was also a fundamental force, leaving lovers and women and friends all over the place as he forged the quintessential giant-ego artist image we all know.
Check out these 5 facts about Pablo Picasso's life.
#5: He's got the longest damn name ever.
If you say his name, it sounds great. In English or Spanish, it's a brilliant name -- the alliterated "P"s really work well as a memorable title. Funny thing, then, that his real name was 23 damn words long.
#4: A ladies' man he was, and then some.
Sure, everyone is pretty clear on the fact that he messed around with plenty of women during his life, but this is actually even more remarkable than you might think, because most of them were always in their 20s or 30s, and Picasso kept getting older (the women stayed the same age, however).
#3: He was arrested on suspicion of stealing the Mona Lisa.
Back in 1911, someone swiped Da Vinci's famous La Giaconda from its home in the Louvre. Picasso's good friend was arrested by the Parisian police on suspicion of the robbery, and to try and divert attention away from himself, he led the police to Picasso. While old Pablo got released shortly after, the rumors stayed with him for life.
#2: He could paint 'traditionally' without a problem.
If you've ever seen the Picasso museum in Barcelona, you might know this already -- while critics loved to attack Picasso for his apparent lack of artistic talent, and his utter refusal to adhere to traditional methods of painting, he could produce a reasonable copy of any great masterwork if it was necessary. It just never was.
#1: His last words? Yep, about having a drink.
No, he didn't get some kind of wonderful epitaph in there that will be remembered for centuries, but his last utterance -- "drink to me, 'cause I cannot do it now on my own" -- is fitting for a man who lived life to the fullest.
