Me and some dear old friends were passing the time by having lunch the other day. There was this massively cool restaurant downtown, and we decided to go there. You can listen to guitar music while you eat your vegetables. You can either order off the menu, or you can ask the chef to prepare something for you that is completely unique.

All of a sudden, they said they were going to give away lots of prizes and gifts. We hadn't realized it, but this was the restaurant's one hundred year anniversary. They wanted to thank all the customers for being loyal for the last year. They were going to draw the numbers by lottery, and then give the prizes to the customers. I was very excited.

And with a big clap of artificial thunder, they revealed the magical prizes. Right on top of the heap was this shiny portable DVD player. In recent times, these technological marvels have become exceedingly popular, and for some very good reasons. One reason is that they can be used on long car trips. The kids can watch DVDs in the back seat, and not bother mom and dad who are up front arguing over where to stop for lunch, or why the gas tank is suddenly empty.

And many people besides families use these as well. They are for anybody who wants to pass the time while in an otherwise boring situation. My buddy told me a story with a great example of this. When he was in college, you could rent lectures from famous professors on DVD. Whenever he found himself in a very boring lecture, he would pop in a more interesting and educational DVD to help him learn the material.

Another example would be jury duty. Instead of sitting there for six hours reading the newspaper or trying to stay awake, you could easily watch a couple of DVDs while waiting to see if your name was going to be called. I'm sure you can see how useful this can be to keep your sanity while waiting in that utterly boring jury duty room.

When the time came to give away the portable DVD player, I was really hoping I'd win it. Both my friends have one, but I don't. When they called the winner of the portable DVD player, and I realized it was me, I was happier than a clam. I will be a loyal customer of that restaurant now for the rest of my life.
