29 Sep 11 Dr. Freud Is Considered The Father Of Talk Therapy

Sigmund Freud was born Sigismund Schlomo Freud in 1856. Psychoanalysis is attributed to him and some of his techniques are still in use today. For example, the setting for therapy is a dimly-lit, quiet room. The patient relaxes on a couch and allows any thoughts in the subconscious mind to surface.

He urged the patient to use free association and say anything that came to mind. He perceived resistance as a way to suppress a thought that the subconscious mind found unacceptable. What is called the Freudian slip, is when a hidden thought is expressed verbally. This can be revealing.

A catharsis allowed the patient to bring all repressed thoughts to the conscious mind. Freud thought this allowed the patient to understand them. The purpose of psychoanalysis was to bring out those beliefs and get rid of the neuroses they caused.

Psychoanalysis using Freudian technique is a lengthy process. He proposed the Oedipus complex to be a desire for the mother. Allegedly, both genders felt this same urge. Psychoanalytic theory claims that when a child learns to identify with the parent of the same sex, it is an indication the Oedipus complex is resolved.

Oral stage, anal stage, phallic stage, latent stage and genital stage are the five periods of early childhood development in Freudian theory. According to him, every problem can be related to sex in some way. He believed neuroses began during one of those stages.

His other theories included the concept of the id, ego and superego. The id is the unconscious part of an individual. It is an unorganized group of drives and impulses operating on instinct alone.

An individual s intellectual functioning and reasoning is the ego. It sets up defense mechanisms, which hide the impulses the individual finds unacceptable. It is the ego that is in touch with reality.

A person s conscience resides in the superego. This is where guilt is experienced when the individual does something wrong. It is the individual s sense of moral right and wrong. Freudian theory is based on these three concepts. It is the purpose of psychoanalysis to attempt to bring the three together in a harmonious way.
