For about 20 years, every parent has been very vigilant of the would-be dangers of toys. Being a conscious parent, I make it a point to update myself of the latest news especially on harmful issues that may harm my kids. Recently an updated list of 3 most hazardous toys has been released. The irony with it, our child might be already playing with these toys, without our consent.
1. WALL-E foam rocket launcher, from Disney-Pixar. This toy makes use of a tube launcher that is pumped with air to shoot a rocket of up to 20 feet high. What is significantly notable is its contradictory label on the packaging. Expressively, it shows a "FOR ANY AGES" statement which is boldly written. On the other hand, it also expresses a "not recommended for kids below three years of age" note at the back of its package. Confusing though, the manufacturers have declared that it is safe, but it in fact this toy launches very fast that it can cause major accident with the eye.
2. The "Moon Board Pogo." This ride on toy has a trick handle connected to a board with a stretchable string. For two reasons, the elastic string could be very dangerous. Firstly, the string is extremely stretchy, making it possible to wrap around a child's neck squeezing the airways. Since it also springs back when extended and released, it can possibly harm the eye severely. The toy manufacturers' advice is to wear protective gears like helmet, wrist, elbow and knee pads for this moon board pogo, but still this cannot ward off these two hazardous injuries to happen.
3. "Curious George Counting - My First Book of Numbers." This book is made for babies, especially those in the crib stage. Even so, various small elements of the "rattle" for instance, are packaged with the book which could choke the baby if swallowed. The rattle has a 6-inch removable rod, made of metal, and five beads, made of wood. These parts are nice-looking to the babies that they could easily detach it.
It is really essential to research and read if your child's toy is safe or not. I am recommending every parent to be member of the W.A.T.C.H., the World Against Toys Causing Harm master list, to ensure that their kids are away from harmful toys. W.A.T.C.H. publishes yearly a list of "Ten Worst Toys", informing us of the unbelievable truths and issues concerning children.
