Barry Lyndon: This film is an attractive, methodically detailed period piece with megastar O'Neal as Thackeray's'th-century Irish rogue idol who desires prosperity however lets it go to his head. The film is long, intentionally slow although on no account uninteresting. Cast includes Patrick Magee, Hardy Kruger, Steven Berkoff, Gay Hamilton, Murray Melvin, Frank Middlernass, and Andre Morell. The Guru: Harmless comedy in reference to an Indian dance professor (Mistry) who comes to America desiring popularity and fortune in the movie industry. As an alternative, he lands a job in a porno film, is befriended by its gorgeous megastar (who's truly a "good girl" leading a triple life), then accidentally becomes a star as the "expert of sex." Some ludicrous gags, a likable leading guy, and excellent joke performances by Graham and Tomei improve this choppy feel-good flick. Repulsion: Polanski's first English-language film is a phenomenal mental shocker portraying the psychological deterioration of a sexually repressed gal left alone in her sibling's condo for few nights. The film hasn't lost one bit of its impact. It can leave you anxious for many nights after watching it. Cast includes Catherine Deneuve, Ian Hendry, John Fraser, Patrick Wymark, Yvonne Fumeaux, and James Villiers. (105 minutes,'65)

The King of Comedy: A pungent black comedy in reference to a show business hanger-on and total loser who cherishes America's top Television comic talk show host and orchestrates a weird plan to get some air time. Cast includes Robert De Niro, Jerry Lewis, Dianne Abbott, Sandra Bernhard, Shelley Hack, Tony Randall and Fred de Cordova. (109 minutes,'83)

Iron Eagle 2: A comparably idiotic sequel, with General Gossett enlisting guide Humphrey to team with his Soviet counterparts on a secret mission in the Mideast. Cast includes Louis Gossett, Jr., Mark Humphrey, Stuart Margolin, Alan Scarfe, Sharon H. Brandon, and Maury Chaykin. (105 minutes,'88)

Belle de Jour: Bunuel's wry and upsetting story of a virginal newlywed who works the night switch in a high-style Parisian brothel, unbeknownst to her spouse. Bunuel's recipe of stunning topic belies the acute humor of his script (co-written with Jean Claude Catriere). Cast includes Catherine Deneuve, Jean Sorel, Michel Piccoli, Genevieve Page, Francisco Rabal, and Pierre Clementi. (100 minutes,'67)

Rhapsody in August: Average (by his own estimations) little Kurosawa is a piece in reference to the hurtful memories of a Japanese woman who recollects the bombing of Nagasaki at the end of WW2. Gere, in a hyped up cameo, doesn't appear too out of place as a Japanese American member of the old lady's lengthened family. Cast includes Sachiko Murase, Richard Gere, and Narumi Kayashima.
